The professor placed the 5 foot spear in a 3ft x 3ft x 3ft crate. It easily fitted diagonally from one bottom corner to the  opposite upper corner, a distance of almost 5.2 feet. (Of course you remembered Pythagoras's simple theory from your
school days.)
